Doing It Right: Businesses and Organizations Making a Difference

Here at Green Gate we really believe that work should ultimately lead to happiness. That doesn’t necessarily mean every organization has to save the world; mostly, it means that we believe in compassionate and supportive work environments and that if you have the ability to do a little more outside your scope of business then go for it—and hey, if you are trying to save the world, that’s even better.

Lately, we’ve seen a lot of businesses doing great things. Particularly, the following three organizations really spoke to us. Two of them are international efforts that are doing huge things through simple ideas. The other is a local business that reached out to a member of its community to offer love and respect through a hot meal.

Take a look below to see what people are doing to make their global community a happier, healthier place. We hope these will inspire you to spread a little extra love to someone in need.

Skateistan

According to the organization’s Facebook page, Skateistan is an “International non-profit providing skateboarding & educational programming for kids in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa.” Almost half of the kids that Skateistan works with are girls who have to wear restrictive clothing that makes many sports unavailable to them. Many of them also live in oppressive and sometimes dangerous environments and skating gives them a chance to feel empowered and free, which is a priceless feeling for someone who might not get to experience it often.

Check out the organization’s Facebook page for some truly amazing images.

The Shoe That Grows

The Shoe That Grows is a project of Because International that designs and distributes a shoe that can be expanded to grow five sizes and last five years. According to the project’s website, “Over 2 billion people in the world suffer from soil-transmitted parasites and diseases.  The Shoe That Grows…[provides] better protection and better health for children” than if they had no shoes or shoes that did not fit. Find out how you can help this cause by visiting theshoethatgrows.org.

PB Jams is a restaurant in Oklahoma that made headlines a few weeks ago because of the generosity of its owner, who noticed that someone had been eating out of the restaurants garbage and posted this note to her door:

“To the person going through our trash for their next meal,

You’re a human being and worth more than a meal from a dumpster. Please come in during operating hours for a classic Pb&j, fresh veggies, and a cup of water at no charge. No questions asked.”

This serves to show that your business doesn’t have to be doing international work to help people. There are people who need help in every community, and even simple gestures can make a difference.
